Austin releases welcome seats and becomes America’s best city in new ranking

Austin has been featured on various lists over the years – best city for millennials, best city for tech workers, best place to live, and more. Now we have won the best award the city can receive.
Language learning app Preply polled more than 1,500 residents of the country’s largest metropolitan area to determine which cities have the most polite and rude people. Luckily, Austin tops the list of polite cities (or, in other words, the least rude).
“Based on our results, Austin residents enjoy the laid-back, friendly city vibe, even as the city continues to grow rapidly,” Prepley said. “In general, Texas, like the rest of the South, is known for its politeness and friendliness, which underscores the stereotype of Southern hospitality. The Lone Star State has five of the most polite cities in the US, and they’re all reasonably concentrated.”
El Paso is 13th on the good list, San Antonio is 14th, and Dallas is tied for 15th with Charlotte, North Carolina.
Preply’s list of the most polite cities differs from the list published earlier this year by Condé Nast Traveler magazine. The Readers’ Choice Awards annual poll ranked Greenville, South Carolina as the friendliest city in America, with San Antonio ranked 4th and Austin 10th.
Meanwhile, on a list published by Airbnb last year, Austin ranked 7th, Dallas 9th, and San Antonio 10th among America’s most welcoming cities.
SXSW 2022 didn’t make as much of an impression on Austin’s economy, but attendees received slightly lower attendance and lower hotel rates.
South by Southwest continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with its economic impact on the local economy down 27% from the year before the pandemic in 2019 to this year in 2022.
On September 21, SXSW announced that this year’s music, film and interactive conference had a $280.7 million economic impact on Austin’s economy. For comparison, the economic effect of the collection in 2019 amounted to $355.9 million.
Consulting firm Greyhill Advisors produced the 2019 and 2022 Economic Impact Study. The city of Austin closed the 2020 edition of SXSW five days before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. The 2021 event will take place virtually. This year, the face-to-face collection lasted 13 days.
“We celebrate the return of SXSW to Austin and its unique energy to showcase the future of art, live music and technology,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in a press release about this year’s Economic Impact Report. “SXSW reflects why and how the city is home to some of the most innovative and creative people. Once again, our local businesses and creatives can benefit from the support that SXSW provides.”
While SXSW’s economic impact has declined from 2019 to 2022, the event remains one of the biggest money-makers for Austin’s hospitality industry.
In 2022, SXSW booked over 10,000 individual hotel bookings directly to attendees who registered for events, totaling over 45,500 nights. The average room rate per night for hotels booked at SXSW in 2022 is up $2 compared to the 2019 average. Direct bookings at SXSW alone generated nearly $1.8 million in tax revenue from hotel rentals for the city of Austin this year.
“We’re excited to see the crowd returning… after being locked up for so long,” said Hugh Forrest, SXSW’s chief programmer. “This year’s event was a huge success for the organization and the city of Austin.” hard to beat, but we’re excited to create an even stronger experience this March.”

An Architectural Digest-worthy home in downtown Austin’s Brentwood neighborhood just hit the market for $5.5 million.
Built in 1955, the hotel consists of a one-story main house, a guest house and a swimming pool. The house is located almost on an acre at 5500 Shoal Creek Blvd. Support Shoal Creek Greenbelt.
Interior designer Rebecca Gainsley, owner of the 4,693-square-foot home, worked with Laura Roberts Design and landscape architecture firm Studio Balcones to transform the property.
“The master bedroom is completely private as it offers views of the grounds from a high vantage point among the trees,” the description reads. “The master bathroom is warm and inviting, with a large double walk-in shower surrounded by rich dark stucco and custom tiling.”

Palo Seco 512 is a family trailer that has more Instagram followers than many of Austin’s top restaurants.
Editor’s Note: We got it. It’s hard to keep up with the fast pace of Austin’s restaurants and bars. We bring you our regular roundup of major food news.
Birria tacos have never tasted better than outside a gas station. La Tunita 512, Austin’s favorite miniature trailer that sells Birria – and often sells out – has taken a three-month hiatus for inspections and “a few changes” and is suddenly returning as the Palo Seco 512 on September 16th. Tacos are stuffed with brisket and cheese and fried on the grill, and a clear soup is served as a separate side dish. For fun, try this in a handy ramen bowl. Palo Seco 512 at 2400 Burleson Rd. open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm, with tickets advertised on Instagram as sold out.

Sour Duck Market is focused on local products, so its partnership with YMCA is fully in line with the brand. On September 28, the market will donate 25% of all sales to a community center where members of the YMCA team will be available to speak with patrons. It takes about 10 minutes to drive from Sour Duck to Townlake and East Communities YMCA, so it can be a good day to start a new snack and daily activity.
